Description
The Gilded Page is Godmere’s most prestigious rare book dealer and antiquarian, housed in a three-story building whose windows are enchanted to prevent theft while allowing natural light to illuminate the precious volumes within. The scent of old leather, parchment, and ink permeates the air, mixed with subtle preservation spells that protect the collection.
The proprietor, Erasmus Quill, is an elderly human scholar with half-moon spectacles perpetually perched on his nose and ink stains on his fingers. He has spent his life acquiring, preserving, and trading in rare texts, building a reputation as one of the most knowledgeable book dealers in the kingdom. His memory is prodigious - he can recall the contents, provenance, and location of virtually every volume in his extensive collection.
The main floor displays the more accessible rare books - first editions, beautifully illuminated manuscripts, collected works of famous authors, and scholarly treatises. The second floor houses the truly rare and valuable volumes, accessible only to serious collectors with appropriate credentials and funds. The third floor serves as Erasmus’s private library and restoration workshop, where he personally repairs and preserves damaged texts.

Proprietor: Erasmus Quill
A thin, elderly man with wispy white hair, spectacles that constantly slip down his nose, and fingers perpetually stained with ink. Erasmus speaks softly and precisely, treating every book with reverence regardless of its value. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of literature, history, and magical texts. While primarily a scholar, he possesses surprising magical ability and uses it primarily for preservation and protection of his collection.
Erasmus is more interested in books reaching appreciative owners than maximizing profit. He’ll reduce prices for scholars and libraries, but charges premium rates to collectors he suspects won’t properly value their purchases. He refuses to sell dangerous magical texts to those unprepared to handle them responsibly.
Special Services
Book Hunting: For a fee and percentage of purchase price, Erasmus will track down specific volumes through his network of contacts across multiple kingdoms.
Authentication: Erasmus can verify the authenticity and provenance of books, scrolls, and documents, valuable for detecting forgeries.
Magical Assessment: He can identify magical properties of books and scrolls, warning buyers of cursed or dangerous texts.

- Wealthy collectors building private libraries
- Historians tracking down primary sources

- Libraries and academies acquiring volumes
Atmosphere
Silence is expected in The Gilded Page. Customers speak in hushed tones, handling volumes with appropriate care and reverence. Erasmus glides between the shelves like a ghost, always appearing when needed with precisely the right volume or suggestion. The shop feels more like a temple to knowledge than a commercial establishment, where the truly precious commodity is wisdom, and the books are merely its physical manifestation.
Time seems to slow among the ancient tomes, and scholars have been known to lose entire afternoons browsing the collection. The enchanted lighting creates perfect reading conditions, and comfortable chairs are strategically placed for those who wish to examine volumes before purchase.
