NPC villain kobold

Background

Gek is a clever kobold runt who discovered the necromancer Gorrmoth’s spellbook The Butchered Words of Kyoss after The Shades defeated the original threat years ago. Through crude self-teaching and natural cunning, Gek learned basic necromantic magic and used it to violently overthrow Mihilu, the previous kobold tribe leader.

Current Status

  • Self-proclaimed “God of Death” worshipped by his kobold tribe
  • Amateur necromancer with delusions of grandeur
  • Obsessed with Orcus but doesn’t understand the demon lord was evil
  • Teaching magic to other kobolds, causing problems throughout Westvale

Personality

  • Megalomaniacal - genuinely believes he’s destined for godhood
  • Cruel but intelligent - rules through fear and magical superiority
  • Historically ignorant - thinks Orcus was a legitimate ruler to emulate
  • Ambitious - constantly plotting to expand his power and influence

Connection to Stumble Inn

Gek recruited the kobolds displaced from The Stumble Inn cellar, teaching them basic magic in exchange for loyalty. He saw their displacement as an opportunity to gain followers and demonstrate his “divine” power to help the downtrodden.

Combat Abilities

Gek is a kobold with the following modifications:

  • Hit Points: 25 (20 additional hit points)
  • Armor Class: 12 (studded leather armor)
  • New Action - Death Magic: Ranged Spell Attack: +4 to hit, range 30 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d12) necrotic damage.

Equipment

Goals

  • Immediate: Raise undead army starting with the ogre skeleton
  • Short-term: Expand control over local kobold tribes
  • Long-term: Become a true necromantic power like his misunderstood hero Orcus

Relationships

  • Mihilu: Former leader he overthrew, now imprisoned and bitter
  • Nork: Kobold alchemist who secretly opposes Gek’s rule
  • Skrix the Blue Kobold: Recent recruit from The Stumble Inn, one of his more talented magic students, conflicted about Gek’s methods
  • Dragon Wyrmling: Considers it weak compared to his magical power

Potential Downfall

  • Overconfidence in his magical abilities
  • Poor understanding of necromantic principles (ritual with ogre skeleton will fail)
  • Divided followers - not all kobolds support his harsh rule
  • Isolation - has no allies outside his tribe

Story Hooks

  • Main Threat: Source of magical problems plaguing The Stumble Inn
  • Ruby Connection: May have connections to cult activities
  • Historical Parallel: Shows what happens when people misinterpret the legends of The Four
  • Moral Choice: Can be defeated violently or potentially reasoned with/reformed

Roleplay Notes

  • Grandiose speech about his divine destiny
  • Casual cruelty toward followers who displease him
  • Genuine confusion when told Orcus was evil
  • Desperate need for validation and worship
  • Quick to anger when his authority is challenged
